In rural Iowa, a man in his 80s who had been driving with his dog lost control of his Jeep on a patch of ice and crashed into a frozen lake. The vehicle broke through the thin ice, trapping both the driver and the dog inside the frigid water. With temperatures plummeting and time running out, the situation was perilous.

A nearby teenager, whose name was shared in local coverage as Joe Salmon, responded immediately, rushing toward the lake and jumping into the icy water to help. Braving the freezing temperatures and unstable ice, he reached the submerged vehicle, assisted the elderly man, and helped retrieve his dog as well.

Emergency responders later confirmed that both the man and his canine companion survived thanks in large part to the teenager’s brave actions.
